The Rose Gardens of Heliogabalus is a painting completed in 1888 by the English painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema.
This painting was inspired by a sadistic and exotic story of the Roman Emperor Heliogabalus (204-222 AD). Heliogabalus is said to have legendarily drowned himself under rose petals during a banquet for his guests.
The painting depicts, on a rich pavement, a scene in which Heliogabalus showers his guests with rose petals. While Heliogabalus sits on a high throne, there is an atmosphere of fun and feasting around him. Guests joyfully dance or relax under the rose petals scattered on them.
Alma-Tadema brings the scene to life using a detailed composition and a rich color palette in the painting. The rose petals and fabric textures of the clothes give the picture a realistic and impressive atmosphere.
While the painting deals with an exotic and surprising subject, it also reflects the luxury and magnificence of the Roman Empire. The surprising and sometimes perverse story of Heliogabalus is dramatized in this work by the artist.
Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema's painting The Roses of Heliogabalus is now available as a canvas painting!
