About 6 months before his death on July 29, 1890, Van Gogh received a letter from his beloved brother Theo. Theo had a son, and he and his wife Jo had named their son Vincent. Overjoyed by this news, Van Gogh wanted to give them a special painting as a gift. Influenced by both Japanese art and the blossoming trees in Arles, Van Gogh painted a white-flowered almond tree with its branches bursting with buds against a blue sky.
