Van Gogh received a letter from his beloved brother Theo about 6 months before his death on July 29, 1890. Theo had a son and he and his wife Jo had named him Vincent. Van Gogh was very happy with this news and wanted to give them a special painting as a gift. Van Gogh, who was influenced by both Japanese art and the budding trees in Arles, painted the white blooms of an almond tree against a blue sky.
This painting has a special place in the eyes of his admirers because it is not in the style we are used to seeing from Van Gogh. In Eastern culture, almond trees herald the arrival of spring by blooming in February. Just as he heralded the birth of his nephew, little Vincent.
