James Webb Cosmic Abyss Wall Cover

Another photo shared by NASA revealed the birth of stars and individual stars in the Carina Nebula. In this photo, images of the "Cosmic Abyss" taken by looking through cosmic dust provide new information about the formation of stars and also demonstrate the capabilities of Webb's cameras.

While photographing objects in the early, rapid stages of star formation can be challenging, Webb's extreme sensitivity, spatial resolution and imaging capabilities have enabled us to immortalize elusive moments.

The twinkling star-studded "mountains" and "valleys" seen in this image are actually the corners of a young stellar nursery called NGC 3324 in the Carina Nebula. Images taken with infrared light from the James Webb Space Telescope have revealed for the first time that star birth occurs in previously unseen areas.

The image, which appears to be three-dimensional and resembles steep cliffs on a moonlit night, is called the "Cosmic Abyss." The highest "peak" point in this image is about seven light-years high.

The cavernous area was excavated by intense ultraviolet light and stellar storms from massive, hot, young stars at the center of the bubble just outside the image.

The intense ultraviolet rays emitted from young stars are slowly eroding the wall of the nebula, forming it. The magnificent columns of gas on the wall resist the radiation. The "steam" that seems to rise from the star mountains is actually hot ionized gas and hot dust evaporating from the nebula due to the continuous radiation.
