Death of Socrates Painting Wall Covering

Socrates was one of the most important figures in ancient Greek philosophy. Socrates' death was a dramatic event during the time he lived in Athens and was known for his teachings.

Socrates had gained a following among the youth in Athens by publicly philosophizing. However, Socrates' philosophical ideas were found disturbing by the Athenian authorities and some powerful people. Among the accusations made against him were that he was corrupting the minds of the youth, not believing in the new gods, and disparaging the religious traditions of the state.

Socrates was executed in Athens in 399 BC at the age of 70. According to the story, Socrates refused to deny the charges brought against him and refused to accept other punishments proposed to the people. He was convicted by the judges and sentenced to death by drinking poison.

Socrates accepted the punishment of drinking poison and calmly made all preparations for his death. After saying goodbye to his friends and students, he ended his life by drinking the poison offered to him to carry out the death penalty, known as cyclops (a known poisonous plant).
