The Fall of Phaeton was painted by Peter Paul Rubens, a famous painter of the Italian Renaissance, between 1604 and 1605. This painting is about the story of Phaeton in ancient Greek mythology.

Phaeton was the son of the sun god Helios. According to the story, Phaeton asked his father for a wish to prove his true identity. His father Helios granted Phaeton's wish and allowed him to control the sun chariot filled with horses to fulfill his wish. However, Phaeton's inexperience and lack of control caused the sun chariot to go off-trajectory and scatter the sun's rays unevenly, scorching the earth.

Rubens' painting portrays this mythological event, depicting a moment when Phaeton's chariot is out of control, people around him flee in fear, and the earth is scorched. In the painting, Phaeton desperately reaches out of his chariot to save himself, while the gods and goddesses in the sky watch anxiously.
