The Rose Gardens of Heliogabalus is a painting completed by the English artist Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema in 1888.
This painting was inspired by a sadistic and exotic tale of the Roman Emperor Heliogabalus (204-222 AD), who was said to have been mythically strangled under rose petals during a banquet for his guests.
The painting depicts a scene of Heliogabalus showering his guests with rose petals, on a richly decorated table. Heliogabalus sits on a high throne, surrounded by an atmosphere of revelry and feasting. The guests dance or rest joyfully under the rose petals scattered about them.
Alma-Tadema brings the scene to life by using detailed composition and a rich color palette. The rose petals and the fabric textures of the clothes give the painting a realistic and expressive feel.
The painting deals with an exotic and surprising subject, while also reflecting the luxury and splendor of the Roman Empire. The surprising and sometimes perverse story of Heliogabalus is brought to life dramatically in this work by the artist.
