🌞 SUMMER CAMPAIGN! 25% OFF THE SECOND ITEM IN YOUR CART ON ALL PRODUCTS.

The Place project, designed by Josh Wardle, was a collaborative social experiment hosted on the social networking site Reddit in April 2017 and repeated in April 2022.

The 2017 experiment involved an online canvas hosted on a subreddit called r/place, where registered users could edit the canvas by changing the color of a single pixel from a 16-color palette. After placing each pixel, a timer prevented the user from placing more pixels for a duration ranging from 5 to 20 minutes. The experiment was terminated by Reddit administrators on April 3, 2017, approximately 72 hours after its creation. In just 72 hours, over 1 million users edited the canvas, placing a total of approximately 16 million pixels, and over 90,000 users were active when the experiment ended. A magnificent artwork emerged at the end of the event, with significant participation from Turkish users featuring the Turkish Flag and an image of Atatürk.

Place's relaunch was announced on March 28, 2022. It began on April 1, 2022, and lasted four days, including two expansions of the canvas to allow for more area. The color palette was also expanded on the second and third days. Unlike in 2017, individual subreddits immediately began coordinating to design pixel art, and large communities formed on Discord and Twitch in efforts to expand existing art, replace defaced pixels, and place new images over existing ones. As of April 3, approximately 72 million pixels had been placed by over 6 million users, at a rate of over 2.5 million pixels per hour. Furthermore, there was a six-fold increase in the number of users on Reddit between the two experiments, including a 4.5-fold increase in pixels placed. Finally, in the 2022 Place event, users were restricted to placing only white pixels. The entire canvas was gradually filled with white space, returning to its original blank state.

And until the next event, r/place, with its final state and prominent Turkish Flag and Atatürk images, is ready to live on your wall.
