Targa - Porsche Metal Wall Decor

With the new concept, Porsche was responding to the increasing safety requirements for convertibles in the American market and opposing voices calling for a complete ban on convertibles in the United States. When deciding on a name for the model, the racetracks where Porsche was particularly successful were taken into account, and this led to the Targa Florio, a road race in Sicily where Porsche had enjoyed great motorsport success since the mid-1950s. For a short while, the "911 Flori" was discussed, until Domestic Sales Director Harald Wagner stumbled upon the answer by asking, "Why don't we just call it Targa?" The Italian term also means "license plate", but according to legend, this only came about while the copywriters were working on the sales brochure. In August 1965, Porsche filed a patent for the Targa concept, and from the autumn of 1966, the Targa was released to great success as the coupé for the 911, 911 S and 912. From late summer 1967, Targa models could optionally be ordered with a fixed, heated rear window made of safety glass instead of the foldable plastic rear window.
