About six months before his death on July 29, 1890, Van Gogh received a letter from his beloved brother Theo. Theo had a son, and he and his wife Jo had named him Vincent. Van Gogh, delighted by the news, wanted to give them a special painting as a gift. Influenced by both Japanese art and the blossoming trees in Arles, Van Gogh painted an almond tree with its branches bursting with white blossoms against a blue sky.

This painting holds a special place in the hearts of his admirers because it is in a style we are not accustomed to seeing from Van Gogh. In Eastern culture, almond trees bloom in February, heralding the arrival of spring. Just like the birth of his nephew, little Vincent, heralded a new beginning.
