About six months before his death on July 29, 1890, Van Gogh received a letter from his beloved brother Theo. Theo had given birth to a son, and he and his wife, Jo, had named him Vincent. Overjoyed by this news, Van Gogh wanted to give them a special painting as a gift. Influenced by both Japanese art and the budding trees in Arles, Van Gogh painted an almond tree, its branches bursting with buds, covered in pure white blossoms, against a blue sky.
Because this painting is not in a style we're accustomed to seeing from Van Gogh, it holds a special place in the hearts of his admirers. In Eastern culture, almond trees herald the arrival of spring by blossoming in February, just as they heralded the birth of his nephew, young Vincent.
