About 6 months before Van Gogh died on July 29, 1890, he received a letter from his beloved brother Theo. Theo had a son, and he and his wife Jo named their son Vincent. Van Gogh was very happy with this news and wanted to gift them a special painting. Van Gogh, who was both influenced by Japanese art and influenced by the budding trees in Arles, painted the buds of an almond tree's branches exploding and its pure white flowers against the blue sky.
