One night in late 1932, a Philadelphia businessman named Charles Todd and his wife Olive introduced their friends Charles and Esther Darrow to a real estate board game they had recently learned. As the two couples sat around the board, excitedly rolling dice, buying property, and moving their tokens around, the Todds were pleased to note that the Darrows loved the game. In fact, they were so taken with it that Charles Todd made them their own set and began teaching them some of the more advanced rules. The game had no official name: it wasn’t sold in a box, it passed from friend to friend. But everyone called it the 'monopoly game.'

They played it many times with other friends. One day, Darrow, who was unemployed and needed money to support his family, despite his exposure to the game, asked Charles Todd for a written copy of the rules. Todd was a bit surprised, as he had never written them down. Nor did written rules appear to exist anywhere else.

In fact, the rules of the game had been invented in 1903 in Washington D.C. by a brave, progressive woman named Elizabeth Magie. But the game’s place in public history was lost for decades, and transferred to the man who had picked it up from his friend’s house: Charles Darrow. Today, Magie’s story can finally be told.

For Elizabeth Magie, known to her friends as Lizzie, the problems of the new century were so vast, the income inequalities so great, and the monopolists so powerful, that it seemed impossible for an unknown woman working as a stenographer to have any chance of ameliorating society's ills with something as trivial as a board game. But she had to try. Every night, after her work in the office was done, Lizzie sat at home, sketching and re-sketching, pondering and re-pondering. It was the early 1900s, and she wanted the board game to reflect her progressive political views - that was the whole point. There was one obvious outlet. At the turn of the 20th century, board games were becoming increasingly common in middle-class homes. Also, more and more inventors were discovering that games were not just a pastime but also a means of communication. And so Lizzie set to work.

Endless thanks to Lizzie, the unknown creator of Monopoly, still one of the most popular board games today.
