Reddit Place Wall Cover

The Place project, designed by Josh Wardle, was a collaborative social experiment launched on the social networking site Reddit in April 2017 and repeated in April 2022.

The 2017 experiment featured an online canvas located in a subreddit called r/place, where registered users could change the color of a single pixel using a 16-color palette. After each pixel was placed, a timer prevented the user from placing a new pixel for 5 to 20 minutes. In just 72 hours, over 1 million users edited the canvas, placing a total of approximately 16 million pixels. An impressive work emerged at the end of the event, with Turkish users making a great contribution with the Turkish Flag and Atatürk imagery.

Reddit Place was announced to restart on March 28, 2022; it began on April 1, 2022, and lasted four days, including two expansions of the canvas. Unlike 2017, individual subreddits immediately began coordinating to design pixel art; large communities were formed on Discord and Twitch. As of April 3, approximately 72 million pixels had been placed by over 6 million users. At the end of the event, the entire canvas was slowly filled with white space, returning to its original blank state.
