Reddit Place Wall Cover

The Place project, designed by Josh Wardle, was a collaborative social experiment that was featured on the social networking site Reddit in April 2017 and repeated in April 2022.

The 2017 experiment included an online canvas located in a subdirectory called r/place, where registered users could edit the canvas by changing the color of a single pixel instead of a 16-color palette. After each pixel was placed, a timer prevented the user from placing any more pixels for a period ranging from 5 to 20 minutes. The trial was terminated by Reddit administrators on April 3, 2017, approximately 72 hours after it was created. In as little as 72 hours, more than 1 million users edited the canvas, placing a total of about 16 million pixels, and more than 90,000 users were tested when the trial ended. At the end of the event, in which Turkish users had a great participation with the Turkish Flag and the image of Atatürk, a wonderful work emerged.

reddit It has been announced that Place will be restarted on March 28, 2022. It started on April 1, 2022 and took four days, including two expansions of the canvas to allow for more space. On the second and third days, the color palette was also expanded. Unlike 2017, individual subreddits immediately started coordinating in designing pixel art, and large communities were formed on Discord and Twitch in attempts to expand existing art, replace defaced pixels, and overlay new images over existing ones. As of April 3, approximately 72 million pixels have been deployed by over 6 million users, at a rate of over 2.5 million pixels per hour. There was also a sixfold increase in the number of users on Reddit between the two experiments, including a 4.5x increase in placed pixels. Finally, in the 2022 Place event, users are restricted to placing white pixels only. The entire canvas was gradually filled with white space and returned to its original blank state.
