In 1888, Van Gogh began to experience the first attacks of his mental illness and voluntarily returned to St. Louis, a monastery in Saint-Rémy, near Arles. Paul was admitted to the Mental Hospital. Between May 1889 and May 1890 the painter stayed in this hospital. The Prisoners' Circle was painted while the painter was staying in this mental hospital in February 1890, the year he committed suicide by shooting himself. .
